We are thrilled to announce that singer-songwriter, pianist and multi-instrumentalist Jamie Cullum will judge the Music category in this year’s Academy Excellence Awards.
Jamie began playing piano and guitar at the age of eight; in his mid teens, he was in and out of rock bands playing guitar, drums and piano; he was also the drummer in a hip-hop combo, eventually finding his way back to jazz through the samples used in his favorite hip-hop recordings; and spent the end of his teen years living in Paris, where he honed his skills performing in local jazz clubs before going on to become the biggest-selling British jazz artist of all time.
Jamie has won an enviable reputation as a magnetic live performer, playing freewheeling concerts that emphasize spontaneity and improvisation—and which rarely employ a set list.
With a Grammy, two Golden Globe and several BRIT nominations under his belt, Cullum is a success story around the globe; the most successful UK jazz artist ever, who has single handedly taken jazz into the mainstream.
The singer-songwriter's albums 'Pointless Nostalgic' ,'Twentysomething', 'Catching Tales' and 'The Pursuit' have sold over 5 million copies worldwide.
He has written for the London West End Stage (When Harry Met Sally), and for the BBC TV series 'After You've Gone'. On TV Jamie has anchored for VH-1 and has starred on the judging panel for the acclaimed 'Must Be The Music' on Sky1 HD.
Jamie has hosted several documentaries for BBC Radio 2 featuring such eminent subjects as Blue Note Records, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, and Quincy Jones and currently presents his own weekly prime time evening show for BBC Radio 2, the most highly rated station in the UK.
On joining the judging panel for this year’s Awards, Jamie said: "I’m really pleased to be judging the music category for the Academy Excellence Awards and intrigued to read the entries and see how students think music contributes to happiness and well-being in our lives.”
